The Clearing is a vision of the future in the grounds of Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park

Astronomy for survivors

Saturday 25 November

The Clearing is an attempt to help you explore how a future afflicted by climate change will feel. It aims to teach you the skills you’ll need, not just to survive, but to thrive, in the collapsed/technologically-liberated world we’re creating for our children.

But it’s important not to forget what we once knew. For instance, we know the rock that we’re standing on is just a complex biological reaction, orbiting around a nuclear furnace, in the middle of nothing at all. We know that the earth goes round the sun, not the other way around. We know that there are billions of solar systems like ours, out there, waiting to be discovered.

This workshop is an attempt to introduce the rest of the universe to The Clearing. We’ll learn how to navigate from the night sky, how to identify the constellations, and how telescopes work. And we'll wonder aloud about whether we'll get there.
